Ken Verburg

A Life of Service and Smiles

2025 Ken VerBurgsm

Years provide a reflection of what has filled that time, and few have filled them with as much joy and service as Ken Verburg.

Born on November 9, 1944, in Hull, Iowa, Ken was the first child of Richard and Marian (Vink) Verburg, followed by his siblings, Arlan and Rhonda. Raised on a hardworking Iowa farm, Ken learned early the value of dedication and simplicity—qualities that would shape the man whose smile never wavers.

Ken grew up south of Inwood, IA, near Fairview, SD, attending various schools before graduating from Rock Valley Public. His passion for mechanics led him to attend body and fender school in Omaha, where he discovered he was colorblind—an unexpected challenge for a career in painting and matching colors.

With jobs scarce in 1964, Ken joined a bridge construction crew but soon found himself drawn to a greater purpose. He volunteered for the U.S. Army, enlisting for three years and serving in the Road Building Corps of Engineers. In May of 1965, he received orders to South Korea, marking a significant departure from home.

Before leaving, Ken met Mary Lou, and their relationship blossomed through letters exchanged daily. Upon his return, marriage became a possibility. With permission from Mary Lou’s father, the couple swiftly planned their wedding—an enduring commitment that will reach 59 years on June 17, 2025.

Their first home was in Washington State, where Ken considered reenlisting but ultimately chose to remain stateside. Had he done so, he would have served in Vietnam. Instead, he returned to Inwood to farm, later moving back to Washington for construction work before settling in Rock Valley in 1972—where he would build a life and legacy.

Ken and Mary Lou raised two daughters, Kristina (Dr. Garth) Robinson and Janet Cromwell, each building families of their own. Ken’s devotion to his family was evident in the time he spent creating lasting memories. Long before “Daddy Dates” were encouraged, he found meaningful ways to connect with his girls, proving that the gift of time was the most valuable of all.

His career in mechanics and construction led him to VanOort Tractor Parts, where he worked for 30 years before retiring in 2015—though retirement hardly meant slowing down. His passion for woodworking and bringing joy to children led him to create Wonder Toys, turning his craftsmanship into a delightful business-hobby.

Fishing trips with his daughters filled his days with stories and laughter, and his commitment to service remained steadfast. Since 1997, Mary Lou has volunteered with Justice for All (JFA), a mission Ken embraced in 2023, offering his help in the baler building. His service extends beyond labor—he lifts spirits, forming friendships like his bond with Walt Blom, with whom he works side by side.

Ken carries his faith wherever he goes—it is not confined to a place but lives within him. His genuine kindness and unshakable smile radiate peace and warmth.

One particularly memorable JFA trip to Mississippi, led by Roger and Carol Vis, deepened Ken’s understanding of the ministry’s outreach. Ken’s love for Jesus took root during his time in the Army, where a chaplain in South Korea guided him into a deeper relationship with Christ. John 3:16 became a cherished verse, reflecting the foundation of his faith.

Even in retirement, Ken continues to serve his country, participating in military funerals and, in 2023, taking an honor flight to Washington, D.C., to pay tribute to veterans.

Ken carries his faith wherever he goes—it is not confined to a place but lives within him. His genuine kindness and unshakable smile radiate peace and warmth. Justice for All is grateful to have him as a volunteer, not only for his hard work but for the joy he brings to every room.
